Something a little different...

Although I love making decorative beds with neatly placed counterpanes and pillows every so often I get the urge to dress a bed that I can imagine cuddling up into...a cosy, snuggly bed. This 12th scale bed is one of those...a dreamy jumble of soft white sheets, the kind your legs get tangled in, and large, plump white pillows that your head would just sink into. A little luxury in the form of a silk comforter, quilted and bordered, and a heavy white embroidered throw. The sheets are trimmed  with broderie anglais and the pillows with embroidered bands.  The rose fabric used on the large pillow and bolster is one of my favourites...I still have a little left!

More contemporary hats...

I have been such a busy girl for the last couple of weeks and have been adding some new designs to the Ascot and modern millinery collection.

Simple but elegant styles have always been popular at the races and I hope you enjoy the latest models in 12th scale chic!

All the hats below are one of a kind and can be worn by a 12th scale doll with a suitable hairstyle.

Aqua and bronze bed

When I was in the UK last September I came across the most wonderful aqua silk with bronze stripes running through. I didn't have any particular project in mind but when I came across the four poster bed below I knew it would be just perfect for the dressing.

I love the bed itself. The carvings are so delicate and I really like the 'puffy' top

I will be adding this bed to the 'Dressed beds' section of my website this evening if you are interested. Matching curtains or accessories can be ordered if you wish

What a week!

Well that was quite a week. The screen on my laptop has been flickering badly for a while now but this week it gave up and has gone completely black. Luckily my daughter is allowing me to use her little netbook, on the condition that I share it with the latest Rhianna sounds :) but everything is so SMALL on it (says the miniaturist,lol!) Just when I was thinking that life was running smoothly again, and with a new collection of hats etc waiting to be photographed, the button on my camera jammed and wasn't able to be fixed, despite DH taking it completely apart on the kitchen table with lots of muttering and sighing. Who would know how difficult is could be to choose a new camera? I have spent hours checking out different models, asking advice from photographer friends and fellow miniaturists. It seems that if a camera does A and B then it won't do C and if you want it do do C and B then you have to do without A, or pay a lot more for it anyway!

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I decided to stick with a Fujifilm. I was pleased with the last one and it has lasted for years. I found a lovely man in a local camera shop who let me play with lots of different cameras for the best part of Thursday morning and surprisingly enough the prices were comparable with the internet stores. This one is a F80 EXR, a little more complicated thatn my last model, but after a bit of playing about and reading the instructions (yes, I really do read them :) ) hopefully I will get some nice results. For now I have taken the following on fairly standard settings...what do you think?

Royal Ascot just around the corner...

Firstly a very big welcome to all the new followers who have joined recently. I really appreciate your interest and hope you will enjoy keeping up with my work in the future.

Spring is really here and with thoughts of Royal Ascot and the Derby just around the corner I have been working on this small collection. Silks, chiffons, elegant and fluffy feathers and cool pastels combine to make up these elegant little pieces. They can all be worn by a 12th scale doll.

Downton Abbey comes to Spain!

I don't watch much television. I am fifth in line in the pecking order for the remote control and usually have somewhere else I'd rather be than in front of a football match or an episode of Dragonballz or Patito Feo. But all this changed when our spanish Channel 3 announced a few weeks back that they would be televising the series of Downton Abbey that was so popular on UK TV and not only that...I could press a button and it would broadcast in English!

Every Tuesday night for the past 3 weeks I have been in heaven...sofa all to myself...soaking up the kind of costume drama that I had forgotten existed.

And of course, for a 12th scale miniature milliner, a world of Edwardian inspiration...

Back to the nursery...

Well I know it seems like a long time ago now but I eventually finished Sylvie's nursery and she has now received all the furniture and is in the process of setting it all up in her Victorian house. You can see the baby's crib below. The crib is by Bespaq and I have dressed it using the pale caramel silk toile that I printed myself and also used on the toddler bed. The drape is cream silk chiffon with lace edging.

Before the nursery was even completed Sylvie was already planning her next room...a twin walnut bedroom, again in Victorian style, with creams and peach tones. She particularly liked a snippet of floral fabric that I sent her from the 'Mary Rose' collection but I have been unable to source more and only had a small piece so we agreed to use it for accents and base the room on silks and textures. The two twin beds were dressed in co-ordinating fabrics but not identical to add interest. As before I had great fun 'filling' several of the drawers of the chest and side table. A matching dressing table and silk curtains for two large windows complete the set as you will see below.

Catching up...and Carnival!!

I can hardly believe that I haven't posted anything here since before Christmas! What started as a short break for mince pies and gift wrapping has turned into nearly 3 months. Of course, here in the Canary Islands, almost as soon as the last traces of Christmas have disappeared we start to prepare for Carnival. The shops fill with the most amazing selection of fabrics, everywhere you look there are masks and costumes, and around the streets you can hear the groups of 'Murgas' (Carnival singers) practising for hours on end.

We asked the children to pick the theme this year (were we mad???) and they chose 'Alice in Wonderland'. With a group of 4 adults and 9 children (not all mine ;) ) to costume, as you can imagine my house has been a chaotic mess with half made outfits on every possible surface. Each child chose their character and luckily we decided on a Queen of Hearts, a Red Queen and a White queen to keep our 3 teenagers happy.

My youngest insisted that he wanted to be a soldier and was not too impressed with his Knave of Hearts outfit (no sub-machine gun :( ) until we found a photo of the knave from the Tim Burton film looking suitably menacing. My eldest son was born to be the Mad Hatter and I'm so glad that his hat was the first thing that I made although he will probably suffer from neck traumas all his life after balancing the weight of it through two long processions. Now I know why I prefer 12th scale! The Dormouse had her very own large fabric teapot to sleep in...and hide her refreshments inside! I was really proud of the pink flamingo but no one wanted to carry it!

The children spent so many afternoons over the past  6 weeks making giant teacups from papier mache and decorating our huge cake which we put together on a 'teatable' over an old laundry trolley. Under the tablecloth were even more er.,.. refreshments ;)

My friend Sandy (The Cheshire Cat) made a great job of all our make-up and we were all thrilled to bits to be awarded 1st prize for the group costumes.

And what was I in all this (apart from wardrobe mistress and bottlewasher)??? Well you may see a large blue caterpillar hovering at the back of the photos trying to keep a very low profile (I knew the Spiderman sleeping bag would be useful one of these days,lol!)
